Stephen Weiss: Bought Out by Red Wings

The Red Wings bought out the remaining three years on Weiss's contract Tuesday, MLive.com's Ansar Khan reports.

Analysis:

The Red Wings will owe $16 million to Weiss, who was appeared in just 78 games during his two seasons with the team as a result of injury. He showed that he still had some offensive ability in his repertoire when healthy last season (nine goals, 25 points in 52 games), but at 32 years old, it's doubtful that he'll reemerge as a 50-point scorer in the remaining years of his career. Weiss will become an unrestricted free agent and isn't likely to command a hefty salary on the open market.
