Devils' prospect Josh Jacobs leaves Michigan State for OHL
New Jersey Devils prospect Josh Jacobs is opting for the junior route.
The team's 2014 second-round pick has decided to leave Michigan State after his freshman year to sign with the Sarnia Sting of the Ontario Hockey League.
"I’m very thankful to Michigan State University and the hockey community for everything over the past few years and I wish them nothing but the best going forward," Jacobs said in a release obtained by Chris Solari of the Detroit Free Press.
The decision to leave means Jacobs will now forfeit his NCAA eligibility. Devils general manager Ray Shero spoke about the move stating the decision was Jacobs' and that he supported it.
"I talked to Josh and this is to me absolutely, positively a personal decision,” Shero said, according to Tom Gulitti of the Bergen Record. “It was the family's and Josh's decision. They met with Michigan State and if that's what's best for him, then that's wonderful for him. I would never be part of that decision."
Jacobs had nine assists in 35 games with the Spartans. A press conference to introduce Jacobs to the Sting is scheduled for Monday.
