The monumental signing of Mike Babcock by the Toronto Maple Leafs may have caused a shift in the coaching world.
Prior to Babcock's historic eight-year contract worth an estimated $50 million, and even newly-appointed Edmonton Oilers coach Todd McLellan's reported 5-year, $15-million deal, Chicago Blackhawks bench boss Joel Quenneville was the highest-paid coach, making $2.95 million a season.
With that in mind, reporter Cam Cole asked Quenneville an interesting question Thursday: "I am wondering what your net worth is?"
The question raises eyebrows considering Quenneville has won two Stanley Cups opposed to Babcock's one.
"We'll let you guys figure that out," Quenneville answered with a laugh. "Happy for him, we'll see how that all plays out and we'll see what happens."
The Chicago coach is under contract with the Blackhawks through the 2016-17 season, and if he hits the free market in 2017 we'll see yet another head coach demanding big dollars.
