PHOTO: Fan tosses octopus on the ice in Florida

Throwing octopi on the ice in Detroit is a tradition that dates back over 60 years, but it happened in an unlikely locale on Tuesday night.

A traveling Red Wings supporter (or a local opponent of marine life) tossed one on to the playing surface early in the third period at the BB&T Center in Sunrise, Fla.

It looks like a toy, but it's likely that the fan just brought a frozen one and forgot to thaw it before hurling it from the stands.

Rookie mistake.
