The Detroit Red Wings have recalled defenseman Xavier Ouellet from the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins to replace the injured Brendan Smith, who was placed on the seven-day injured reserve with a hand infection.
Smith's injury was the result of a fight with Columbus Blue Jackets forward Nick Foligno. Smith is on medication to help heal the wound.
Ouellet, a second-round pick of the Red Wings in 2011, has five points and a plus-2 rating in 13 games for Grand Rapids.
