VIDEO: Dan Boyle's shootout attempt fools everybody but the refs

Saturday's shootout between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the New York Rangers was more notable for what happened between the shots than the shots themselves.

Dan Boyle appeared to score in the third round of the shootout, giving the Rangers what they assumed was a much-needed victory in the divisional battle. As New York began to celebrate, officials reviewed the play and determined Boyle knocked the puck in on a rebound opportunity after Fleury made the initial save, which is a violation of rule 24.2.

"Half the guys had their sweaters off, half the sticks were packed," Rangers coach Alain Vigneault told reporters after the game, admitting the referees made the right call.

The shootout resumed after all players returned to the ice. Brandon Sutter scored for the Penguins on the following attempt and Pittsburgh netminder Marc-Andre Fleury turned aside an attempt by Rick Nash to seal the victory for Pittsburgh.
