Bruins recall Joe Morrow, Zach Trotman on emergency basis

In the wake of the medium-term knee injury to captain Zdeno Chara, the Boston Bruins have recalled depth defenders Joe Morrow and Zach Trotman from the Providence Bruins of the American Hockey League, the club announced Friday.

Morrow and Trotman will practice with the team in Boston on Friday and should be available to play Saturday night when the Bruins visit the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Trotman, 24, has appeared in two NHL games in his career. The skilled right-handed shooter is coming off of an impressive eight-goal campaign with Providence during the 2013-14 season.

Morrow, 21, was a first-round pick of the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2011 and has already been traded twice (by the Penguins and the Dallas Stars) in his young career. The left-handed Morrow has yet to appear in an NHL game, but had a pretty impressive season as a 21-year-old in the AHL in 2013-14.

Obviously neither of Trotman or Morrow are credible Chara replacements, and if they make it into the Bruins' lineup, they'll do so in a third-pairing role.
