Capitals hire Corsi creator Tim Barnes as analytics consultant
The summer of analytics is in the rear-view mirror, but the trend of NHL teams hiring statistics gurus continues unabated.
The Washington Capitals announced they have hired Tim Barnes, also known as Vic Ferrari, as an analytics consultant.
Barnes is the creator of Corsi, a statistic that measures shot attempt differential.
The Globe and Mail reported Barnes had been hired by an undisclosed team on Friday.
The Capitals haven't historically been one of the more receptive teams when it comes to analytics, but perhaps seeing the Toronto Maple Leafs, Edmonton Oilers and other clubs make notable analytics hires spurred a change in philosophy.
Washington ranked 24th in the NHL last season with a Corsi For percentage of 47.7.
General manager Brian MacLellan spoke well of Barnes in a statement Saturday.
"Tim is very experienced and well regarded in that field and will be a valuable asset to our organization.” (2)
