Jordan Staal will undergo surgery on Friday to repair a fractured fibula in his right leg, and is expected to be out of the lineup for three to four months, general manager Ron Francis announced Thursday.

Staal was injured during a preseason game against the Buffalo Sabres on Sept. 23 after getting tangled up with defenseman Josh Gorges.

Based on the estimated recovery period, Staal could be back on the ice sometime early in 2015.

Since joining the Hurricanes prior to the 2013 regular season, Staal appeared in all 130 regular season games, scoring 25 goals and adding 46 assists.
