The San Jose Sharks announced they have signed defenseman Justin Braun to a five-year contract extension, keeping him with the club until 2019-20.

San Jose didn't release terms on its website, but Braun's agent, Neil Sheehy, announced via twitter his client will haul in $19 million over five years.

The $3.8-million average annual value is a significant raise from the $1.25 million Braun will earn this season before his extension kicks in ahead of the 2015-16 campaign.

A strong possession defenseman, Braun skated in all 82 games for San Jose last season, chipping in with 17 points and finishing with a plus-19 rating.

If Braun's play continues to move on the upswing shown over the past few seasons, this move should pay considerable dividends for the Sharks.
