Ryan Malone speaks after informal skate with Rangers at MSG: 'I made a mistake'
Ryan Malone was offered a professional tryout with the New York Rangers Sunday and took part in an informal skate with select team members at Madison Square Garden on Monday morning.
Malone, who was charged with possession of cocaine and DUI in April, is ready to move on. The cocaine charge has been conditionally dismissed pending Malone's completion of a pre-trial program.
"I made a mistake and obviously I have to admit that," Malone told reporters. "Thankfully, luckily, no one got hurt and it has obviously changed my life for the better, even my family's life."
Malone knows this may not turn into a contract and he will likely find himself in the same position next summer, but hopes to change the minds of NHL teams with his tryout.
"We've been in contact with a few teams but I think here it's a great opportunity, a great team, great young talent," he said. "I just decided to come out here and show my face and see how that goes."
Although Malone wouldn't comment on the status of his DUI charge and the community service he needs to complete, he admitted he needed to be cleared physically, which wasn't a problem.
"Getting reinstated by the doctors was the one step needed and that happened a few days ago."
Malone wouldn't say whether he believed the tryout would result in a contract, but he hopes he'll continue his NHL career within the next year.
