Report: Ducks nearing contract extension with Patrick Maroon

Kirby Lee / USA TODAY Sports

The Anaheim Ducks are reportedly nearing an agreement with forward Patrick Maroon, 26, on a contract extension, according to Andy Strickland of truehockey.com. Strickland believes the deal will pay Maroon somewhere in the neighborhood of $6 million over a three-year term.

The welterweight enforcer, a 2007 sixth-round draft pick of the Philadelphia Flyers, had a breakout campaign with the upstart Ducks in 2013-14. Playing mostly on a sheltered depth scoring line on Mathieu Perreault's wing, Maroon tallied 11 goals and contributed 29 points for the top regular season team in the Pacific Division.

In an extended AHL career spanning over 350 games, Maroon produced points at a rate that's suggestive of a player with legitimate top-six offensive pop. He also possesses a huge body - Maroon is listed at 6-foot-3 and 229 pounds - and is a willing fighter.

Maroon dropped the gloves a team-leading 13 times during the 2013-14 campaign, amassing a 4-5-4 win/loss record according to hockeyfights.com voters.
