Report: Jets sign F Carl Klingberg to 1-year, 1-way, $650K deal
The Winnipeg Jets have signed 23-year-old forward Carl Klingberg to a one-year, two-way deal that carries an NHL salary of $650,000, according to a report from TVA's Renaud Lavoie.
The lanky Swedish winger played a supporting role for Winnipeg's AHL affiliate the St. John's IceCaps on their run to the Calder Cup Final this past season. The checking forward chipped in 22 goals and 42 points in 65 regular season games with St. John's, adding three more goals and eight points in 21 games during the postseason.
A second round pick at the 2009 NHL entry draft, Klingberg appeared in 10 NHL games during the course of his entry-level deal. While his career AHL production isn't suggestive of a player with the offensive pop to hold down a top-six role on an everyday basis, Klingberg's speed and size project in a bottom-six role.
This season and training camp will be critical for Klingberg if he hopes to ever hold down a regular NHL job in Winnipeg. The Swedish born forward is no longer exempt from waivers, and will have to clear if he doesn't manage to break camp with the NHL club this fall.
