Morrow signs with Lightning: 'They're hungry and growing into their own'

The Tampa Bay Lightning signed forward Brenden Morrow to a one-year contract believed to be worth $1.55 million Friday, a move that filled a clear need in the eyes of general manager Steve Yzerman.

"We wanted to add some experience," Yzerman said, as per the Tampa Bay Times. "[Morrow] does all the little things in a game that help teams win. He plays hard. He's physical. He's strong."

The 35-year-old veteran of 14 NHL seasons boasts 262 goals, 305 assists and 1,298 penalty minutes on his resume, including 25 points as a member of the St. Louis Blues in 2013-14. Morrow also recorded 46 points in 94 career playoff games and won an Olympic gold medal for Canada in 2010, but does not have his name on the Stanley Cup, losing in the Final as a member of the Dallas Stars in 2000.

Morrow - who joins Valtteri Filppula as the team's only two forwards over 30 - clearly sees an opportunity to accomplish that feat in Tampa Bay, saying "They're hungry and growing into their own. I want to be a part of that."

While Morrow certainly isn't as effective as he once was, his experience could prove to be invaluable to the team's young forwards, much in the same way veteran Marc Recchi helped influence the 2011 Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins.
