Capitals make Nathan Walker first Australian drafted in NHL history

Evan Habeeb / USA Today

The Washington Capitals made history with the 89th pick of the 2014 NHL draft, selecting Australian Nathan Walker.

Walker, who was born in Wales but grew up in Australia, recorded 11 points in 43 games in 2013-14 with the Hersey Bears - Washington's AHL affiliate - after signing a one-year contract. The 20-year-old also played in the USHL and the Czech Republic.

Walker did not make the trip to Philadelphia for the draft, but that won't stop him from celebrating at home.
