The Buffalo Sabres went with pedigree to open the second day of the 2014 NHL draft, selecting Claude Lemieux's son Brendan Lemieux with the opening pick of the second round.
Claude Lemieux was known for his pesky, agitating style and was incredibly effective, helping three different teams win the Stanley Cup during a career spanning 1,215 regular-season and 234 playoff games.
Brendan plays a similar game, recording 145 penalty minutes last season with the OHL's Barrie Colts. He added 10 points in 11 playoff games, hinting at some of the big-game ability his father was known for.
The addition of Lemieux and second-overall pick Sam Reinhart will go a long way towards improving Buffalo's prospect depth at forward.
Lemieux spoke about his dad after the selection.
Lemieux on dad: "I'm proud of his career and how hated he was."
