VIDEO: Predators attempt to boost Shea Weber's Norris Trophy campaign
With the end of the regular season on the horizon, the Nashville Predators find themselves outside the NHL's playoff picture. They are, however, pushing for some offseason hardware, and have released this video in an attempt to boost defenseman Shea Weber's Norris Trophy campaign.
There is no question that Weber belongs in the conversation; Weber has finished second in Norris voting twice before, and head coach Barry Trotz has reiterated that the 28-year-old is playing the best hockey of his career.
Here's a look at the relevant statistics and where he ranks among NHL defensemen:
Shea Weber | Stat | Rank |
---|---|---|
21 | Goals | 1st |
29 | Assists | 20th |
50 | Points | 6th |
-6 | Plus / Minus | 231st |
153 | Hits | 28th |
158 | Blocked Shots | 14th |
26:51 | Ice time / Game | 4th |
In terms of more advanced statistics, Corey Masisak of NHL.com points out that Weber faces a high-level of competition, but (with a Corsi for percentage of 47.9 at even strength in close situations) "isn't able to tilt puck possession back in his team's favor" like Zdeno Chara of the Boston Bruins can, for example.
The fact that the Predators are not on track to be in the playoffs may also hinder Weber's chances, but there's no arguing that he's as valuable as any defenseman in the NHL today.
