Flames players ask PA about Feaster's mandatory foot protection rule

After losing their captain to a broken foot from blocking a shot, Calgary Flames general manager Jay Feaster has made extra foot protection mandatory for all his players.

While the CBA states Feaster can not impose the new rule on any player who does not want to comply, the new rule is going over well with Flames players.

The mandatory foot protection rule Feaster has asked his team to comply with is not an NHL rule, and therefore the players are in their right to ask the player's association if they have to abide by the rule.

The PA has said all players are participating in Feaster's attempt to save further foot injuries from occuring, but have contacted the PA on the issue.

Darren Dreger reports Mathieu Schneider, the special assistant to NHLPA Executive Director Don Fehr, said "No team can unilaterally make a piece of equipment mandatory" which gives the players a cse if they did not want to wear shotblockers.

The request by Feaster, although with good intentions may be a violation of the CBA.
