Blackhawks sign Knight to 3-year, $17.5M extension

The Chicago Blackhawks signed goaltender Spencer Knight to a three-year contract extension with a $5.83-million annual cap hit, the team announced Saturday.

Knight posted a .893 save percentage in 15 games with the Blackhawks after being acquired in the Seth Jones trade in March. He had a .901 SV% in 38 total games last season, including his 23 appearances with the Florida Panthers.

The 24-year-old was set to become a restricted free agent next summer. Knight has one year left at a $4.5-million cap hit on his current contract.

"After joining the team in March, Spencer quickly cemented himself as a crucial piece of our future," Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson said. "A talented, young goaltender, he brings athleticism, sound positioning, and a calm demeanor to his game, and we're excited to watch Spencer continue to flourish in Chicago over the next four seasons."

Knight's new contract includes a 15-team no-trade clause, according to PuckPedia. He will be an unrestricted free agent at the expiration of the deal.

The Panthers drafted Knight 13th overall in 2019. A star with the U.S. national development team and at Boston College, he made the jump to the NHL at the end of the 2020-21 campaign.

Knight went 32-17-6 with a .906 SV% over parts of three seasons to begin his NHL career. He left the Panthers in February 2023 to enter the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program as he battled obsessive-compulsive disorder. Knight spent the following 2023-24 campaign in the AHL, and returned to the NHL last season.

The 6-foot-3 netminder has a 49-33-9 record with a .904 SV% in 95 career NHL games with the Panthers and Blackhawks.
