The Winnipeg Jets selected defenseman Sascha Boumedienne with the 28th overall pick in Friday's NHL draft.

Boumedienne played at Boston University last season and registered three goals and 13 points in 40 games. He was the youngest rearguard in the NCAA.

The Swede broke the scoring record among defensemen at the Under-18s this spring with 14 points in seven games.

Boumedienne doesn't project as an offensive force at the next level despite his standout tournament. He's an impressive skater but lacks the high-end puck skills and playmaking to set himself up to be a future power-play quarterback and point-producer in the NHL. Rather, he is a well-rounded option with room to fill out and could develop into a top-four defender.

The Jets took Swedish defenseman Alfons Freij with their first pick in last year's draft at No. 37 overall.
