Roy to remain head coach of Islanders

Patrick Roy will remain the head coach of the New York Islanders heading into next season, newly hired general manager Mathieu Darche announced Thursday.

Assistants John MacLean and Tommy Albelin won't stay with the club.

Roy replaced Lane Lambert after the latter's in-season firing last January. Roy guided the Islanders to the playoffs in his first year, but the club finished nine points back of a wild-card berth in 2024-25.

The Hall of Fame goaltender has a 55-47-17 record since taking over behind the Islanders' bench in his second gig as an NHL coach. Roy led the Colorado Avalanche from 2013-2016 and won the Jack Adams Award as coach of the year in the 2013-14 campaign.

New York has approximately $26.5 million in cap space to make improvements this offseason. The Isles also own the first overall pick after a surprising draft lottery win.
