Patrick Roy on scratched D Tyson Barrie: 'He needs to be patient'

Colorado Avalanche head coach Patrick Roy addressed his recent decision to scratch promising young defenseman Tyson Barrie for the second game in a row. Barrie was a healthy scratch over the weekend and again for Colorado's 3-2 victory over the Dallas Stars on Tuesday night.

"We're comfortable with the veterans that are there, and he's 22 years old. He just needs to be patient," Roy told reporters (by way of the Denver Post's Mike Chambers). "We're very happy with the leadership of (Cory) Sarich; we're very happy the way (Nate) Guenin has been playing, killing penalties."

After playing nearly 18 minutes in Colorado's season opener, Barrie had seen his ice-time drop precipitously over the course of ensuing contests. Barrie was ultimately the odd man out upon teammate Ryan Wilson's return from injury.

Meanwhile Roy made it clear where Barrie needs to improve if he hopes to get back into the lineup, "If there is one downside (of Barrie's game), it's the way he played on the power play. We expect more from him on the power play."
