VAN 3, NJD 2 (OT): Garrison scores overtime game winner

The Canucks and Roberto Luongo crawled back from a two goal deficit to defeat the New Jersey Devils and former teammate Cory Schneider.

Goals from Jaromir Jagr and Patrik Elias helped build the Devils a short-lived two goal edge, before the Canucks rallied with second period markers from Daniel Sedin and Alex Edler.

The Devils controlled the majority of play in the third period, and seemed to have the Canucks on the ropes late in the contest (despite this being their second game of road back-to-backs).

Ultimately the Canucks got an overtime goal from Jason Garrison on a point shot that was deflected unintentionally by Devils captain Bryce Salvador and past Cory Schneider.

Here's what you need to know:

  • Luongo recorded a quality start and narrowly edged his former backup in the much anticipated goaltending duel.
  • Luongo comes away with the win and the edge in save-percentage, but Schneider was the busier goalie on the inght. Schneider stopped 29 of 32 shots overall, while Luongo saved 21 of New Jersey's 23 shots on goal.
  • Canucks defenseman Alex Edler played a game high 27:37. He added four shots, two hits and a lovely goal. Jason Garrison may have scored the game winner, but Edler was probably Vancouver's most important player in this one.
  • On the second game of road back-to-backs 37-year-old Patrik Elias and 41-year-old Jaromir Jagr combined for 8 shots and four points (although Jagr's secondary assists on Elias' goal was a bit suspect). They're the NHL's version of Space Cowboy's
  • Oft-injured and criticized Canucks winger David Booth had a ridiculous game. The Canucks outshot the Devils nine to one with Booth on the ice, while out attempting the Devils 16 to three.
