Group in Edmonton attempting to play longest hockey game ever
A group of 40 hockey players in Edmonton are hoping to set a new record for the longest game ever played while also raising money for cancer research.
The group has been playing through frigid temperatures in an attempt to reach 252 hours on the ice by Feb. 15, according to CTV News Edmonton. They set the previous record for longest ice hockey marathon in 2018 after playing for 251 hours, seven minutes, and 58 seconds.
"At about 3 a.m. we hit -47 (Celsius) with the wind. We had a whole bunch of guys just finish shift, they were super tired and went back to their trailers, and about half of our trailers ran out of heat last night," Andrew Buchanan, one of the players participating in the World's Longest Game, told CTV News on Sunday.
The group of players includes a couple of ex-NHLers - former Edmonton Oilers forward Kyle Brodziak and former Vancouver Canuck Zenith Komarniski - as well as some former WHL players, according to Terry Jones of the Edmonton Sun.
"This will be the most talent we've ever had," founder Brent Saik said.
The World's Longest Game has raised more than $5.47 million for Edmonton's Cross Cancer Institute since 2003, and has set a goal of $1.5 million this year.
