Rees overcame several injuries in his two OHL seasons. He missed more than eight weeks early this past campaign with a lacerated kidney and suffered a high ankle sprain before his first year, forcing him to miss training camp and the preseason. That ailment lingered throughout his rookie year.
In spite of those injuries, Rees produced when healthy in 2018-19, posting nearly a point per game and improving on his rookie output despite playing nine fewer contests.
The Hamilton, Ontario native represented Canada at the 2019 Under-18 World Championship, producing eight points in seven games. He also helped his country win gold at the 2018 Hlinka Gretzky Cup with four points in five contests.
Rees ranked 23rd on NHL Central Scouting's midterm list of North American skaters, but fell to 30th on the final edition.
What they're saying
Central Scouting described him as having "natural offensive instincts and puck-on-a-string hands," according to the OHL's official website. "He is a dangerous scoring threat when given time and space.”
