Mastrosimone thinks the game at a high level. He can make quick, short passes on the rush and in tight. He has an accurate shot and can get it off quickly. His hockey IQ is really impressive. He's an easily compatible linemate.
The first thing that jumps out when watching Mastrosimone is not positive, though. His skating strides are short and choppy. Both his acceleration and top speed are concerning, especially considering he's not the biggest player. He's gotten away with it thus far in his career because of how advanced his intelligence is.
Mastrosimone finished the year as NHL Central Scouting's 53rd-ranked skater and has committed to Boston University for next season.
What they're saying
"His main issue is his skating," The Athletic's Corey Pronman said. "For a small player, he lacks a true separation gear, and his technique isn’t the best. He flashes average speed but not consistently. His production may not have been fantastic for a U18 in the USHL, but I’m a big believer in the skill level."
