Detroit Red Wings defenseman Mike Green ultimately wasn't traded, but he reportedly gave the club clearance to send him to the Washington Capitals or Tampa Bay Lightning, an NHL source told The Athletic's Craig Custance ahead of Monday's deadline.

Green has a full no-trade clause, which he clearly put to use.

As a pending unrestricted free agent, the 32-year-old was one of the top rental defensemen rumored to be available, and both the Caps and Lightning were said to be interested in upgrading their blue lines for the stretch run and playoffs.

The Lightning did, in the end, by acquiring Ryan McDonagh from the New York Rangers.

Green spent 10 years with the Capitals before joining the Red Wings in 2015-16.

In 56 games this season, Green's recorded 29 points, and was Detroit's lone representative at this year's All-Star Game.
