Bowers is taking a more and more common path to the NHL. His previous play with the Black Hawks followed Joe Pavelski and Craig Smith, as he opted to forego the QMJHL despite being selected fourth overall in its draft. He has committed to play on a scholarship at Boston University beginning in the fall of 2017, where he'll follow in the footsteps of NHLers Jack Eichel and Charlie McAvoy in a strong BU hockey program.

Kris Barker of NHL.com describes Bowers as a strong two-way player with a good understanding for the offensive part of the game. He doesn't excel in any particular area, but he has the know-how to play a variety of roles and projects as a top-six forward. His route through the NCAA will allow teams to be patient with him.
