Report: Giants to interview Mike Smith for head coaching job

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports / Reuters

The New York Giants are scheduling an interview with former Atlanta Falcons head coach Mike Smith, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Smith was at the helm in Atlanta for seven years before the team opted to part ways at the end of the 2014 campaign. He led the club to four playoff appearances and an impressive 66-46 record over that span.

While Smith likely would have earned consideration for a number of defensive coordinator jobs in 2015, he instead chose to sit the season out and enter the interview process this year.

The Giants have already interviewed a number of other candidates as they begin their search for Tom Coughlin's replacement.

Offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo and defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo have already met with team officials, as have Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Teryl Austin and Jacksonville Jaguars assistant Doug Marrone.
