Redskins release Phillip Thomas, Tevin Mitchel

The Washington Redskins released safety Phillip Thomas and cornerback Tevin Mitchel on Wednesday.
Thomas was selected by the Redskins in the fourth round of the 2013 NFL Draft and recorded 27 tackles in 2014. It's a curious move, as Duke Ihenacho and Jeron Johnson aren't the most suitable long-term options at free safety.
Mitchel tore his labrum during practice Monday and was expected to miss the entire campaign after undergoing surgery to repair the ailment. The 23-year-old was waived with an injury designation.
Washington signed cornerback Bryan McCann, ostensibly to replace Mitchel.
