The bid to get the St. Louis Rams a new stadium has hit another snag.
Taxpayers for St. Louis County are no longer being asked to support a proposed football stadium on the riverfont, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The original plan was for taxpayers to pay $6 million a year for the proposed $985-million project.
The office of Governor Jay Nixon called County Executive Steve Stenger and said their participation would not be required to secure a deal for a new stadium, according to the Post-Dispatch.
The County has maintained they would not agree to a payment plan without a public vote anyway. Convincing the public to agree to a new stadium would be challenging, since the the state, city and county are still paying off a $300-million bond debt for the Edward Jones Dome.
All this doesn't bode well for the future of the Rams in St. Louis and unless a suitable financing plan for a new stadium can be worked out, the team could find themselves relocating to Los Angeles as early as 2016.
