Tomlin: Fields' fumbles 'negated a lot of good things'
Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin liked what he saw from quarterback Justin Fields in the team's preseason opener, but he acknowledged that two fumbled snaps impacted the game.
"I thought he did some nice things," Tomlin said, according to Brooke Pryor of ESPN. "But obviously (Fields) was a component of the (center-quarterback) exchange, and from my perspective that's dual responsibility on the center and the quarterback. It negated a lot of good things going on in those first couple of drives."
Fields finished the 20-12 loss with 67 yards on 5-of-6 passing. He was sacked twice and had a pair of fumbles in the contest before giving way to Kyle Allen for the bulk of the game.
Fields was generally happy with his play, outside of those impactful errors.
"I feel like I was in a good rhythm, and I think we were moving the ball well," Fields said. "I think just the fumbled snaps, things like that, they can kill a whole drive, but I think the overall rhythm of things, I think we're in and out of the huddle fast and felt good.
"And I think the snapping part, we just got to be on the same page. I'll put that on me to just be on the same page and know who's in that center or know how to adjust and what I need to do."
Fields will likely get a chance to rectify those mistakes when the Steelers host the Buffalo Bills for their second preseason game on Aug. 17.
