The Kansas City Chiefs signed free-agent running back Jerick McKinnon, the team announced Friday.

McKinnon spent the last three seasons with the San Francisco 49ers.

The 28-year-old missed the entire campaign in both 2018 and 2019 due to knee injuries, but he appeared in all 16 games for San Francisco last season, racking up 319 rushing yards and five touchdowns.

He set career highs with the Minnesota Vikings in 2017, producing 570 rushing yards and 421 receiving yards to earn a four-year, $30-million deal with the 49ers in free agency.

McKinnon will join Darrel Williams as the primary backups to sophomore running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire. Kansas City needed to bolster its depth at the position after opting not to bring back Le'Veon Bell and releasing Damien Williams.
