The New England Patriots fear running back Rex Burkhead tore his ACL during Sunday's defeat to the Houston Texans, a source told Jeff Howe of The Athletic.

Burkhead will undergo an MRI on Monday, Howe adds.

The 30-year-old suffered the injury during the third quarter and was then carted to the locker room. He racked up seven yards on four rushing attempts before being sidelined.

Patriots quarterback Cam Newton said it's "devastating" to lose Burkhead, according to Chris Mason of Mass Live.

Burkhead was on pace for a career year this season, entering Week 11 with 267 rushing yards (4.2 per attempt) and three touchdowns. He's also caught 23 passes for 187 yards and three scores through nine games prior to Sunday.

The 2013 sixth-round pick, who's played the past four seasons with the Patriots, is set to become a free agent after the 2020 campaign.
