Major League Baseball announced Wednesday that it won't punish players for marijuana use beginning in 2020, and Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones believes the NFL may soon change its policy on the drug as well.

Jones, who has been a prominent figure in ongoing negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement, would not go into detail about current labor talks. However, he did hint at a revision of the league's policy on marijuana, which is currently a banned substance.

"I think the world is sensitive to the issue regarding marijuana," Jones said Friday on 105.3 The Fan. "It's also an issue contemporarily where we're excited about being in step with the social and legal scene as it goes forward. And so, we not only have the interest of competitiveness in mind when it comes to any type of substance, we have the issue of the law, and we have the issue of the society focus on it.

"All of that calls and does receive attention when you're discussing this area with players, and I think that you should expect and will expect an adjustment of the contemporary way or the present way that marijuana is being thought about."

Marijuana is currently legal in 11 states, though Texas is not one of them.

MLB's new drug policy no longer considers marijuana a drug of abuse and will treat marijuana-related conduct the same way it does alcohol-related conduct.
