Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton shed his walking boot Sunday after sustaining a foot injury Thursday.

"So far, so good. Every day, he progresses. Every day, it's been positive," Rivera said at his press conference Sunday. "He'll continue to get his treatment and we'll see how he is in the morning."

Newton suffered a sprained foot while being tackled in a preseason contest against the New England Patriots. Panthers general manager Marty Hurney said earlier in the week the team remains cautiously optimistic Newton will be ready for the regular-season opener Sept. 8 against the Los Angeles Rams.
