Philadelphia Eagles head coach Doug Pederson confirmed quarterback Carson Wentz is battling a stress fracture in his back that's "evolved over time" but won't require surgery, while adding that a full recovery will take three months, according to Tim McManus of ESPN.

Pederson wouldn't identify when the quarterback's injury first occurred, according to Zach Berman of the Philadelphia Inquirer. Wentz reportedly battled an ailing back for weeks, yet previous CT scans never revealed a fracture. Earlier in the week, the team believed he was healthy enough to play.

The Eagles listed Wentz as doubtful for Sunday's matchup with the Los Angeles Rams on their injury report Friday afternoon.

The defending Super Bowl champions will be fighting to stay in the NFC playoff picture, and are expected to start Nick Foles on Sunday with Wentz on the mend.

Wentz has thrown for 3,074 yards with 21 touchdowns and seven interceptions in 11 outings this year. He missed the first two weeks of the season while recovering from the knee injury that prematurely ended his 2017 campaign.
