Jets sign former Titans receiver Rishard Matthews

Rookie quarterback Sam Darnold is about to get some help, as the New York Jets announced the signing of former Tennessee Titans wide receiver Rishard Matthews on Tuesday.

Matthews played just three games for the Titans this season before he was granted his release due to a reduced role. The veteran, who turned 29 earlier this month, had caught just three of six targets for 11 yards after signing a one-year, $7.75-million contract extension in August.

The seven-year pro led the Titans with four receiving touchdowns last season and ranked second to tight end Delanie Walker in targets and yards. He set career highs with 945 yards and nine touchdowns in 2016.

The Jets are in need of receiving help after releasing Terrelle Pryor last week as he battles a groin injury. Meanwhile, No. 1 target Quincy Enunwa missed the team's Week 7 contest against the Minnesota Vikings due to an ankle injury.

Against the Vikings, running back Trenton Cannon led New York with four catches for 69 yards.

Darnold, the No. 3 pick of the 2018 draft, has thrown 10 touchdowns and 10 interceptions this season, and has been held under 200 passing yards on four occasions.
