Ravens' Weddle: RPOs are 'just another phase'

Baltimore Ravens safety Eric Weddle is not a fan of the run-pass option.

Increasingly popular in the NFL, RPOs allow quarterbacks to make quick decisions by targeting a key defender and taking him out of the play based on where that defender attacks the offense.

Though they may be trendy - and were a staple of the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles' offense - Weddle does not believe they'll continue to make an impact.

"I think in five years, it's going to be out (of the league)," Weddle said, according to Jared Dubin of CBS Sports. "I think it's just another phase."

The two-time All-Pro defender also sees similarities between the NFL's latest fad and other plays that were popular earlier in his career.

"It's just like the Wildcat, and the quarterback run game, yada yada yada," Weddle said. "Teams that run the ball and take shots are usually the hard teams to beat."

It appears Weddle's coaches agree with their veteran safety. The Ravens ran 11 RPO plays last season, according to Pro Football Focus - the fewest in the league. The Eagles, meanwhile, led the NFL with 181 RPOs.
