The NFL is taking over the investigation into Carolina Panthers owner Jerry Richardson after the team suggested the league step in, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, citing sources.

The Panthers confirmed that an internal investigation into workplace misconduct allegations against Richardson was launched Friday, with the team issuing an official statement shortly after.

The NFL initially declined to comment on the matter, but it appears now the league will be taking a much more prominent role in the investigation.

"The Carolina Panthers and Mr. Richardson take these allegations very seriously and are fully committed to a full investigation and taking appropriate steps to address and remediate any misconduct,” team spokesman Steven Drummond said. "The entire organization is fully committed to ensuring a safe, comfortable and diverse work environment where all individuals, regardless of sex, race, color, religion, gender, or sexual identity or orientation, are treated fairly and equally. We have work to do to achieve this goal, but we are going to meet it."

Panthers head coach Ron Rivera stated his respect for Richardson following the initial investigation announcement, but stated he would withhold judgment until the investigation was complete.
