All-time return TD leader Devin Hester retires

Tim Fuller / USA TODAY Sports

Free-agent wide receiver Devin Hester announced his retirement from the NFL on Tuesday.

Hester - who holds the NFL record for most all-time return touchdowns and is widely considered one of the best special teamers in history - made the announcement on Twitter after 11 seasons in the NFL, eight of which he spent with the Chicago Bears:

The likely future Hall of Famer last played for the Seattle Seahawks during last season's playoffs and hinted at retirement after the team's loss to the Atlanta Falcons.

Hester also spent time with the Falcons and the Baltimore Ravens after leaving Chicago.

The returner racked up 20 total return touchdowns during his illustrious career, including 14 punt return touchdowns - also the most in league history. He was named a First-Team All-Pro four times (2006, 2007, 2010, 2014) and was a part of the NFL 2000s All-Decade Team.
