Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz could miss the start of the 2018 season due to a torn ACL suffered during Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Rams.

Wentz will undergo surgery this week to repair the injury, ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports.

Dr. James Andrews revealed it often takes 9-12 months to recover from the injury, which would keep Wentz out of the 2018 season opener and beyond, ESPN's Adam Schefter and Chris Mortensen report.

Wentz completed 60.2 percent of his passes for 3,296 yards, 33 touchdowns, and seven interceptions during the 2017 campaign and was a leading candidate for NFL MVP after steering the Eagles to an 11-2 mark.

Nick Foles will start in Wentz's absence as the Eagles try desperately to salvage their Super Bowl ambitions.
