An MRI confirmed the Philadelphia Eagles' worst fears Monday, as quarterback Carson Wentz will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL, head coach Doug Pederson announced.

The 24-year-old suffered the injury Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams, where manual tests by team doctors determined the knee ligament was loose - a dubious preliminary sign.

Wentz was enjoying an MVP-caliber season in his second year as a pro, leading the league with 33 touchdown passes against seven interceptions. The Eagles' 11-2 record is the best mark in the NFC.

With the former No. 2 overall pick sidelined, the Eagles will turn starting duties over to Nick Foles, who's navigated similar waters before. While with Philly in 2013, he replaced an injured Michael Vick early in the campaign and went on to toss 27 touchdowns against only two interceptions en route to a Pro Bowl selection.

"He's a highly intelligent football player," Pederson said of Foles, noting that he won't make drastic changes to the offense despite the change in quarterbacks, according to Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The Eagles face the New York Giants, Oakland Raiders, and Dallas Cowboys to close out the regular season.
