Lions' Stafford confuses Verlander with audible call

Rick Osentoski / USA TODAY Sports

They still remember Justin Verlander in the Motor City ... maybe?

Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford appeared to honor the legendary ex-Tigers star, who now pitches for the Houston Astros, with an audible call during Thursday's Thanksgiving Day game against the Minnesota Vikings. Needless to say, Verlander was surprised and honored to hear his name while watching from home.

But, nothing in life is that simple. Many citizens of the Internet quickly proclaimed that Verlander was mistaken, and Stafford had actually called out "Urlacher," the name of former Chicago Bears star Brian Urlacher. Suddenly, Verlander was left unsure about the shoutout from his old friends in Detroit.

The whole thing appears to have left Verlander's head spinning. Has Detroit already forgotten him this quickly? Did Stafford misspeak?

Seriously, help a future Hall of Fame pitcher out, guys.

Quick note for Stafford: next time, keep it simple and just call the "Kershaw" audible.
