Packers officially place Rodgers on IR

Matthew Emmons / USA TODAY Sports

The Green Bay Packers placed quarterback Aaron Rodgers on injured reserve (IR) Friday, the team announced in a statement.

Rodgers suffered a broken collarbone during Sunday's loss to the Minnesota Vikings.

Green Bay hasn't set an official timeline for Rodgers' return, but it's eminently possible that he'll miss the whole season as a result. Rodgers will have to miss at least eight games per terms of the IR designation, before being reactivated.

It was reported by ESPN's Rob Demovsky that the Packers are hoping Rodgers will be able to return for a Dec. 17 game against the Carolina Panthers.

The quarterback was injured when Vikings linebacker Anthony Barr drove him into the ground while he tried to escape the pocket. Barr said he had no intention of injuring Rodgers on Friday.

Rodgers completed 66.3 percent of his passes for 1,385 yards and 13 touchdowns against three interceptions in six games for the Packers.

Brett Hundley will start in Rodgers' absence.
