The C.J. Beathard era is underway in San Francisco.

The winless 49ers turned to the rookie third-round draft pick after starter Brian Hoyer went just 4-for-11 for 34 yards into the second quarter of Sunday's game against the Washington Redskins.

The Iowa product acquitted himself well in the preseason, completing 57.8 percent of his passes and throwing four touchdowns against one interception.

However, Hoyer was acquired during the offseason to take over as the team's starter under new head coach Kyle Shanahan and new general manager John Lynch. The 49ers have gone 0-5 under his leadership, and he's thrown four touchdowns to go with four interceptions while taking 15 sacks.

The 49ers ranked 22nd in total offense entering Sunday's game.
