Report: Browns concerned ankle injury could sideline Garrett for weeks

The Cleveland Browns fear an ankle injury suffered during practice Wednesday could sideline defensive end Myles Garrett for weeks, a source told Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com.

Garrett is expected to undergo an MRI on the ankle. Head coach Hue Jackson told reporters he'll await word from team doctors on the severety of the rookie's injury before thinking about his availability for Week 1, and potentially beyond.

"We will see. I don't want to make medical decisions. I am not very good at them so we will see where we are as we move through the week," Jackson said.

The 21-year-old battled through a foot injury during the summer but had since recovered.

Garrett was selected first overall in the 2017 NFL Draft and is expected to be the cornerstone of the Browns' rebuilding efforts.

The former Texas A&M standout stated on draft night that it was goal to "chop down" Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, the Browns' Week 1 opponent.

Jackson said he supported Garrett declaring his ambitions.

"Absolutely, I do. Now you have to back it up," Jackson said. "You can say that, but I think he understands that his teammates are with him in that. In order to beat the Pittsburgh Steelers, we do have to get Ben down. That is just the truth. That is not something that is out of the ordinary. I think he was expressing what is true. In order to beat the Pittsburgh Steelers, you have to slow Ben down. That is the only way to slow him down is by getting him on the ground."
