Raiders' Del Rio on Sean Smith's assault charge: 'He was defending his sister'

Oakland Raiders corner Sean Smith was allowed to suit up for Saturday's preseason game despite being arrested and charged with assault Thursday.

Smith was charged with beating up his sister's boyfriend and is said to have stomped on the man's head in an incident that occurred in July.

After posting bond, Smith suited up for the exhibition game against the Los Angeles Rams and registered two tackles.

"I think we'll let him battle legally what issues he has. I don't really have anything to add to it," explained head coach Jack Del Rio, according to Vic Tafur of the San Francisco Chronicle.

"I mean, I think you heard the story. He was defending his sister. Obviously, things occurred that were taken issue with, so he's having to defend himself right now."

Smith has not been disciplined by the NFL. His arraignment is scheduled to be held on Sept. 29.
