Todd Gurley's performance in 2016 was one of the NFL's bigger disappointments. Now, he's looking to make up for his sophomore slump in 2017, and then some.
The Los Angeles Rams running back said Wednesday on SiriusXM NFL Radio he has lofty expectations for his production this season.
"Honestly, I never was the guy to really do goals because if I say one thing and it doesn't happen, people would be (negative)," Gurley said, according to Sporting News' Alex Marvez. "But on my key chain it has 1,500 (rushing yards) and 1,000 receiving.
"Obviously, every running back wants to have 1,000 (rushing). That’s the big goal. The more yards you can have, the better position I can have to help this team out."
Chris Johnson's 2,509 yards from scrimmage in 2009 stands as the most in NFL history. No player has ever recorded both 1,500 yards rushing and 1,000 yards receiving in a single campaign.
In 2016, David Johnson led the league in scrimmage yards, rushing for 1,239 and receiving 879.
But in Rams offense with little established talent and a second-year quarterback coming off a terrible rookie year in Jared Goff, Gurley might get enough touches to have a shot at achieving his goal - especially with new head coach and renowned offensive specialist, Sean McVay, in charge.
"I just like his offensive mind looking at this offense and what he did with the Redskins and the success there," Gurley said of McVay. "And just his way of coaching us. He’s been doing a great job. We’ve been happy to work with him."
