Brees believes flag football could 'save the game of football'

Drew Brees is one of professional football's best, and he's concerned about the future of the sport.

Its violent nature and the prevalence of concussions and brain injuries has resulted in a drop in youth football participation. But Brees has an alternative. The quarterback of the New Orleans Saints recently brought a co-ed youth flag football league to Louisiana, one he hopes will catch on in other states.

"I think that this has the opportunity to really save the game of football, honestly," Bress said, according to Mike Triplett of ESPN.

Brees is the father of four young children and though he plays football for a living, he remains concerned about their participation in the sport.

"I would not let my kids play tackle football right now, because I don't think that's necessary, and I don't think it's as fun at this level, and I just think there's too much risk associated with putting pads on right now at this age," said Brees, whose oldest son is seven years old.

"So how can I still allow them to enjoy the game and learn about the game and develop a passion for the game and enjoy everything it has to offer? Well, flag football."

Brees is hoping the non-tackle version of the game will catch on with parents who are concerned about enrolling their kids in football at a young age.

"I think that flag football is the perfect alternative to the parents who have concerns about concussions and the injuries around football," Brees said. "Because you're still able to enjoy the game of football, but in a very fun, safe and yet competitive environment."
